How to Change the Connection Type from HTTP to HTTPS for Star WebPRNT

⚠️ This article will walk you through changing the connection type from HTTP to HTTPS for your Star WebPRNT.

Getting Started

Before proceeding, ensure you have the test receipts to set up the printer.

To perform a hardware test on your printer, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the Star printer.

  2. Press and hold the feed button.

  3. Turn the printer back on.

  4. Continue to hold the feed button until the Network Configuration report prints out. This will print two test receipts. At the bottom of the second page, you will find the Current IP Parameters Status. Keep this page or note the IP address.

  5. Confirm the printer’s IP address.


Setting up WebPRNT

Follow these steps to set up your device successfully:

  1. Open your web browser and type the Star printer’s IP address into the URL field.

  2. Log in to the Star Network Utility using these credentials:

    • User: root

    • Password: public

  3. Click on WebPRNT in the left-side menu.

  4. Ensure the WebPRNT Service field shows ENABLE. If it isn't, switch it to ENABLE.

  5. Set the TCP Port Number to 80.

  6. Click Submit.

  7. Click Save.

  8. Choose the option Save > Configuration printing > Restart device and click Execute. The receipt printer will restart and print a new configuration report.


Setting up SSL/TLS

  1. Open your browser and type in the Star printer’s IP address into the URL field.

  2. Log in to the Star Network Utility using these credentials:

    • User: root

    • Password: public

  3. Navigate to SSL/TLS settings on the left-side menu and click on the Create Self-Signed Certificate/CSR button.

  4. Fill in the required fields with your local information. Ensure that the Domain matches the printer's IP address.

  5. Click the Create button and wait for the success screen.

  6. Select the option Previous Page; the Certificate Form will appear blank.

  7. Click Download to save the certificate file.

  8. Go to SSL/TLS > SSL/TLS Setting. Set SSL/TLS to Enable, and fill in the required fields:

    • TCP Port: 443

    • Certificate: Self-signed

  9. Click Submit.

  10. Select Save.

  11. Choose the option Save > Configuration printing > Restart device, then click Execute.


Add IP Address to Trusted IP Addresses

On iPad

  1. Double-click the Self-signed certificate.

  2. Click Install on the Install Profile Page.

  3. Click Done.

  4. Open Settings on iPad > Click General > About > Certificate Trust Settings.

  5. Turn on the reference for the IP Address of the Printer.

  6. Click Continue.


On Mac

  1. Double-click the self-signed certificate to open it in Keychain Access (it usually appears in login).

  2. If it's not already in System, copy the self-signed certificate to System (located in the Keychain list, drag & drop to System).

  3. Open the self-signed certificate in System, expand Trust, select Use System Default, and save your changes.

  4. Reopen the self-signed certificate in System, expand Trust, select Always Trust, and save your changes.


On Windows

  1. Double-click the self-signed certificate.

  2. Click Install Certificate.

  3. Click Next.

  4. Select Place all certificates in the following store.

  5. Browse to Trust Root Certification Authorities.

  6. Click Next and then Finish.

  7. Click Yes and wait.


On Android

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to Security.

  3. Go to Encryption & Credentials.

  4. Go to Install from storage.

  5. Select a CA Certificate from the list of available types.

  6. Accept the warning message.

  7. Browse to the certificate file on the device and open it.

  8. Confirm the certificate install.
