How to Set Up a USB Star Printer with macOS

Step-by-step guide to set up your USB Star printer with macOS, including driver installation and CleanCloud integration.

⚠️ Warning ⚠️

  • This guide should not be used with Star webPRNT printers. If using a webPRNT printer, please refer to the appropriate guide.

  • The Star TSP100 does not work with macOS. This guide is for Star SP700 (USB) or TSP650II (USB).

Getting Started

Install the Star CUPS Driver

  1. Connect the Printer: Make sure the printer is on and connected via USB.

  2. Download the Driver: Download the Star CUPS driver from the official site.

  3. Install the Driver:

    • Unzip the downloaded driver file.

    • Open the folder and run the starcupsdrv-4.2.0.pkg file.

    • Follow the installation instructions, then restart your computer when prompted.


Check Printer Installation

  1. Verify Installation:

    • After restarting, go to System Preferences → Printers & Scanners.

    • Check for the printer (e.g., Star SP742 (STR-001)). Take note of the exact name, as it will be needed later.

    • If the printer is not listed, wait a few minutes and refresh the list.


Download and Install QZTray

  1. Download QZTray: Download the latest version from https://qz.io/download/.

  2. Run Installer: Follow the installation wizard.

    • If prompted, install Java, then resume and finish the QZTray installation.

  3. QZTray in System Tray: Once installed, QZTray will be visible in your system tray.


Configuring the Printer in CleanCloud

  1. Login to CleanCloud: Go to Settings → Hardware.

  2. Add Your Printer:

    • Scroll to the Receipt Printer section.

    • Select Star as the manufacturer, then click Find Printer and choose the printer from the list.

    • Enable Auto Print Receipt and Print Barcode as needed.

  3. Update and Test: Press Update. Your printer is now ready—try printing a test order!
