How to Set Up an Ethernet Star Printer with macOS

Step-by-step guide to set up your Ethernet Star printer with macOS, including advanced settings, driver installation, and integration.

⚠️ Warning ⚠️

  • This guide should not be used with Star webPRNT printers. If you are using one, please refer to the webPRNT guide.

  • The Star TSP100 does not work with macOS. This guide is primarily for Star SP700 (Ethernet) or TSP650II (Ethernet).

  • Ethernet connections can be unstable and may interfere with integrated payments. We recommend using a USB connection whenever possible for reliability.

Getting Started

Enable Advanced Printer Settings

  1. Open Terminal: Press ⌘ + Space, type Terminal, then select it from the list.

  2. Enable Web Interface: Enter "sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes" and press Enter.

  3. Enter Password: When prompted, enter your password.


Add Your Printer

  1. Open Web Browser: Go to http://localhost:631.

  2. Add Printer:

    • Click Administration > Add Printer.

    • Select AppSocket/HP JetDirect, then click Continue.

    • Type the printer's IP Address in this format: socket://192.168.X.X:9100 (replace with your printer’s IP). Keep :9100 after the IP address.

  3. Printer Information:

    • Enter a Name, Description, and Location (e.g., CC_Receipt).

    • Do not share the printer, then click Continue.

    • Select Raw as the Make, then click Add Printer.

  4. Set Default Options:

    • Set the Starting Banner and Ending Banner to none.

    • Click Set Default Options.


Add a Printer Class

  1. Add Class: Go back to Administration > Add Class.

  2. Enter Class Information:

    • Provide a different name from the raw printer, such as CC_Receipt_Class.

    • Select the raw printer under Members, then click Add Class.


Download and Install QZTray

  1. Download QZTray: Download from https://qz.io/download/.

  2. Run Installer: Run the file and follow the installation wizard.

    • If prompted, install Java, then return to the QZTray installation to complete it.

  3. QZTray in System Tray: Once installed, QZTray will appear in the system tray at the bottom right.


Add Printer to CleanCloud

  1. Login to CleanCloud: Go to Settings → Hardware.

  2. Configure Printer:

    • Select Star as the printer manufacturer.

    • Enter the printer class name (e.g., CC_Receipt_Class).

    • Activate auto-print settings if desired.

  3. Update and Test: Click Update. Your printer is now ready—test it with an order!
